Chimney's are often neglected but it is essential they are kept well maintained.  Being at the highest point of a roof, chimneys get the brunt of the adverse weather conditions. The wind and rain eventually erode the mortar between the bricks, causing the mortar to crack and crumble and eventually loosen the brickwork. Should the brickwork become unstable there is a danger that the chimney may topple and damage the roof and whatever is below it at ground level.  Having the chimney inspected will find any problems and normally all that is required is re-pointing between the brickwork. A small repair undertaken early will prevent a bigger and more expensive job if left until later.  The chimney pots may also need re-bedding.
